My original post for these Easy Gluten Free Porridge Pots was borne out of me rebelling against the trend that was overnight oats (shudder). This trend seems to have subsided somewhat now. But still, what if you don’t like your oats soaked overnight, what if you can’t stomach a cold gloop in the morning washed down with a glass of whatever trendy drink people are choosing to drink this week, what if you like delicious hot porridge, even better a different delicious porridge every day of the week?
I’m pleased to say that the cold gloop trend has moved over to pave way for the far superior HOT porridge pots. However, these pots are flippin’ expensive so I’ve come back to update this post with my more cost effective Homemade Gluten Free Porridge Pots.
Before you head to the recipe (a simple base for your porridge pot to add your favour flavours to). Have a browse of the tips, advice and recommendations on how to master the homemade porridge pot. It’s all useful relevant info and you won’t be bombarded with ADs as this is an AD-FREE website.

What Oats are safe for these Porridge Pots?
Let’s get one thing clear, the elephant in the room, here in the UK we deem certified gluten free oats to be okay to eat. To be certified they have to undergo rigorous tests and be grown in safe locations away from cereals containing gluten. To read more about it head over to Coeliac UK to read Are Oats Gluten Free?
The caveat to this is that many Coeliacs find they cannot tolerate the protein Avenin that is found in OATS, so just as the protein GLUTEN presents with symptoms, so does AVENIN.
If this is an issue for you, you may wish to consider making your porridge with buckwheat, which despite its alarming name is not a WHEAT at all!
Buy gluten free buckwheat flakes – more expensive but can be used in exactly the same way at gluten oats

Wait a minute! I don’t have time to do this – Naked Oats, By Naked Nutrition
Well in that case I have two suggestions, buy individual porridge pots (most supermarkets will stock gluten free porridge pots these days) or, if you are in the USA, you could opt for a Naked Nutrition’s Naked Oats HUGE tub of porridge ideal for both hot and cold/overnight porridge oat breakfasts.
They come in three flavours; Cinnamon Roll Protein Oats, Green Apple Cinnamon Oats and, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Banana Flavour Oats.
Naked Oats combines premium grass-fed whey with gluten-free rolled oats for a delicious shake or oatmeal that support lean muscle, stable energy, and optimal digestion. With less than thirty seconds of prep time, you can have a high performance breakfast rich in protein and fiber ready to go when you wake up.

How to make Porridge Pots from scratch?
This is the simplest of base recipes for your Breakfast Porridge Pots. You only need four ingredients (technically three); Whole gluten free oats, blended gluten free oats, powdered milk (I use powdered coconut milk) and a little sugar.

Method to make porridge pot base
- Weigh out (ideally using scales) the gluten free oats that you need to blend and add to a blender, I use my Ninja but have in the past used a hand blender or smoothie maker.
- Next weigh out the whole gluten free oats, powdered milk and sugar
- Now simply add to a large bowl and using a whisk combined the ingredients.
This is now your Porridge Pots base and you can go wild adding your own flavour preferences.

Can I make individual Gluten Free Porridge Pots?
I came across a similar idea on Pinterest years ago where jars of layered granola had been made up in advance and thought the visual and time saving concept was a great idea. Prepare all your breakfasts in one go, then reap the benefits of guilt free on-the-go breakfast or lunch at a later date.
These Porridge Pots (or technically Porridge Jars) are so quick and simple to make. I might also add they were also super fun to construct, if you’ve got little ones why not get them involved.

The jars in the image are 500ml Kilner jars but if you also plan you make these solely for the children you might want to buy 250ml jars and half the ingredients per jar.
To be fair the 250ml jars would be enough to suite the appetite of many adults. I’ve added links below for the jars, they are affiliate links but I personally trust these jars and know they are made to withstand extreme heat without the glass cracking so in my option they’re the best on the market.
Each jar is made up of the Porridge Pot Base Recipe then you add your personal favourite ingredients to add extra flavour.

- Tropical: Apricot, Banana & Coconut
- Fruit & Nut: Currants & Roast Hazelnut
- Choco Fruit & Nut: Currants, Roast Hazelnut, Dark Chocolate Chips

- Bakewell Tart: Cherries & Almonds
- Sticky Toffee Pudding: Dates & Pecans
Is it cheaper to make your own gluten free Porridge Pots?
I did the maths. This recipe makes 9 portions of porridge if you use 4 heaped tablespoons and 100ml of boiled water per serving.
9 shop bought pots (lets use Bio & Me as an example shall we?) cost £11.70 at the moment because they retail at £1.30, of course prices constantly change. You can also buy Bio & Me online (not an affiliate link) as they sell their TWO gluten free flavours for £7.99 for 8 pots, not including postage and packaging.
Let’s see what these homemade Gluten Free Spiced Apple Porridge Pots cost…
250g Gluten Free Oats = £1.14
50g Coconut Milk Powder = £1.04
50g Sugar = £0.04
50g Dried Apple Slices = £0.41
50g Hazelnuts = £1.05
1tsp Mixed Spice = £0.14
So, the grand total for a 1 litre Kilner Jar of Gluten Free Spiced Apple Porridge is £3.82. That works out at £0.42 pence per Porridge Pot.
So in summary, and I have to admit I was surprised myself, making these gluten free porridge pots yourself saves you a whopping £7.88 for 9 portions.
Even better, if you have porridge every day for a year you save £321.20
How do I make these Porridge Pots dairy free?
To make these dairy free I add a vegan and gluten free powdered coconut milk. There are a few on the market but not all are certified gluten free so I used this one by The Coconut Company.
Another way to make these is to omit the ‘milk’ powder and add ‘milk’ to your serving then heat in the microwave. But that’s a little more effort than just boiling a kettle when you make your tea in the morning!
But I’m not dairy free!
Not a problem, you can use a ‘normal’ powdered milk such as Your Health Stores Skimmed Milk Powder.

Other delicious Gluten Free Breakfast Ideas
Well my goodness me, there are loads of breakfast ideas to be had out there, the question is how much time do you have on your hands? If the answer is minimal time, I have to eat and run every day, then prepping in advance is key to a happy healthy tummy for the start of each new day.
I would recommend making breakfast muffins packed with oats and slow release carbs and dried fruit for energy, these can in most cases be made at the weekends and frozen, simply get your muffin out the night before and in the morning you can grab it and go with coffee in one hand, muffin in the other.
